Fishing Report

May 31, 2026

Sturgeon hot in the gorge · Walleye on · Buoy 10 filling · September is the sleeper

Catch-and-release sturgeon between Beacon Rock and Bonneville has been on. Eastern Oregon walleye is turning on — weekday trips out of Tony's John Day Pool launch are wide open through June (lodging's available for veterans making the drive). Buoy 10 weekends in August are filling fast, but here's the move most people miss: September. Once the Buoy 10 crowd thins, the Portland-area Columbia and the gorge fish great — coho stack up close to home, no four-hour drive to Astoria, dates still wide open. If you can't get an August slot, book a September day in town instead.

NAVY. VETERANS
AFFAIRS. 25 YEARS
ON THIS RIVER.

Tony spent his early career in the U.S. Navy and ten years after that at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He's been fishing the Columbia for over 25 years — first in his off-hours, then full-time.

He purchased a boat in 2018 — a 23-ft Alumaweld Columbia — and launched Tony O Guided Adventure the same year. Same mission, different uniform. 95% of weekly trips run at the veteran rate. He also volunteers for The Fallen Outdoors (TFO) — sturgeon derbies, kokanee events, anytime they need a boat.

"Went out on the Columbia with Tony-O the last day of September. The wind was blowing a bit but Tony got us up river past Cape Horn to the vicinity of Beacon Rock. Another guide friend turned around at Cape Horn and went back. We got into fish. Tony knows that river."

Full FAQ →

Where do you launch from?

Boat ramps around Portland, Gresham, Vancouver WA, Cascade Locks, or Astoria (for Buoy 10). Walleye launches from Irrigon, Oregon on the John Day Pool. Tony confirms the exact launch when you book.

What's included in a guided fishing trip?

All rods, reels, terminal tackle, bait, boat, fuel, and fish cleaning. Bring your Oregon fishing license, layers, a rain shell, and lunch.

Can civilians book or is this veteran-only?

Anyone can book. Veterans, active-duty military, retired military, first responders, and their dependents pay $200. Everyone else pays $250. Same trip, same boat.

Never fished before?

Tony will teach you. Most first-timers on the boat didn't grow up fishing. He's been on the Columbia for over 25 years and running first-trip days since 2018.

Coming from out of state?

Buoy 10 in August. Sturgeon any time. Tony books out-of-state visitors year-round and confirms launch points by phone before you fly in.

Want to gift a trip?

Call Tony and tell him who it's for. He'll hold the date and work the payment out at the ramp the day of the trip.
